ZCCM-IH Highlights Shaft 28 Progress as Luanshya Mine Advances Development
ZCCM-IH Reviews CNMC Luanshya Performance as Shaft 28 Development Progresses
ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc (ZCCM-IH) has reviewed operational and development progress at CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines, highlighting advances at Shaft 28 and the need for greater local participation as Zambia’s mining sector expands.
The ZCCM-IH Board conducted an oversight visit to the mine on September 22 as part of its Copperbelt investment tour.
The visit included discussions with CNMC Luanshya management on the mine’s FY2025 and first-half 2026 operational and financial performance.
The review covered production, exploration, human resources, health and safety, operational challenges and strategic priorities.
The Board also inspected several key areas of the operation, including Shaft 28, where dewatering had been completed and underground clearing and construction works were under way.
The delegation also visited the new Shaft 28 mine site, Mashiba Ramp construction, Muliashi Open Pit backfilling, vent shafts and winders.
ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson Phesto Musonda said increased investment and production needed to generate broader economic opportunities for Zambians through local businesses, skills development, employment and community development.
“Growth must have a real trickle-down effect. Our investments must create opportunities for Zambian businesses, develop local skills, create jobs and strengthen communities,” Musonda said.
ZCCM-IH Chief Executive Officer Kakenenwa Muyangwa said the company would continue working with CNMC Luanshya management to support the delivery of projects such as Shaft 28, which are important to the mine’s long-term production.
He said strengthening local supply chains and developing a skilled Zambian workforce would also support operational resilience and competitiveness.
ZCCM-IH holds a 20% equity interest in CNMC Luanshya Copper Mines. The company said follow-up actions had been agreed on key operational and strategic matters, with progress to be monitored through further engagements with its investee companies.
The visit formed part of ZCCM-IH’s broader oversight of its Copperbelt portfolio as the company seeks to strengthen the performance of its investments and support increased copper production, local participation and long-term value creation.
